Dawnwalker PC Stutter & Shader Crash Fixes

Start with the two checks Rebel Wolves has actually confirmed. Everything after that is a diagnostic step—not a promised fix—and avoids deleting saves, changing system files or guessing at performance gains.

01 / SAFE FIRST PASS

Do this first

Confirm the game and platform before changing anything. This page covers the Windows PC retail build around Hotfix 1.0.2. Open Steam’s Downloads page and let any Dawnwalker update finish, then restart Steam and the game. Preserve your saves and avoid registry cleaners, unofficial DLL replacements, save editors and “optimization packs.” None of those are part of the developer’s published workaround.

  1. Install the latest game update offered by Steam.
  2. If the game runs but traversal or camera movement stutters, switch Display Mode to Full Screen.
  3. If the game crashes during shader compilation, identify your motherboard model and compare its BIOS version with the manufacturer’s support page.
  4. Change one variable at a time and test the same location or startup phase again.

Evidence level: the Full Screen and BIOS checks are developer-published. Results still vary by hardware and configuration.

02 / STUTTER

Use Full Screen, not Borderless

Rebel Wolves lists stuttering in Windowed or Borderless mode as a known issue and asks affected players to try Full Screen. In the game’s display settings, note your current mode, select Full Screen, apply the change and restart the game before comparing. Test a repeatable route rather than judging a different scene: walk through the same area, turn the camera at the same pace and watch for recurring frame-time spikes.

This is a workaround while the issue is investigated, not proof that every form of stutter has the same cause. Shader compilation, asset traversal, CPU limits and frame generation can feel similar to a player. If Full Screen makes no difference, restore the previous setting if you prefer it and move to reporting rather than stacking speculative tweaks.

DEVELOPER STATUS

Known issue

Stutter in Windowed / Borderless mode remains under investigation in the Hotfix 1.0.2 notice.

03 / STARTUP CRASH

Crash while compiling shaders

The published developer guidance is to check whether the PC’s BIOS is up to date. A BIOS update is not an ordinary game setting: use only the exact support page and instructions for your motherboard or prebuilt PC model. Record the installed BIOS version first. If the vendor does not recommend a newer compatible version, do not flash a different model’s firmware.

Close unnecessary overclocking or tuning utilities before reproducing the crash, but do not present that as a confirmed cure. If you choose to update the BIOS, keep the machine on stable power and never interrupt the process. Players uncomfortable with firmware maintenance should contact the PC or motherboard manufacturer instead of improvising.

After any vendor-supported update, boot Windows normally, start Steam and let the shader step run again. Record whether the crash occurs at the same percentage and whether Windows Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer identifies the same failing module.

04 / CONTROLLER

Input switching and sprint problems

Hotfix 1.0.2 includes PC adjustments to controller dead-zone and sprint input issues. Steam players have separately reported menus switching between controller and keyboard prompts, sometimes even when they are only touching the controller. Some users say Steam Input improves part of the behavior, while others report that menu switching remains. That makes Steam Input a community-reported test, not a universal fix.

  1. Install Hotfix 1.0.2 or later before troubleshooting the older sprint symptom.
  2. Disconnect unused controllers and virtual input devices, then restart the game.
  3. Test once with Steam Input in its current state, then once with the setting changed for this game.
  4. If prompts still switch by themselves, revert your preference and include controller model, connection type and Steam Input state in the report.

Do not confuse this PC issue with button remapping on a PS5 gamepad. The same developer notice lists the missing mapping option as still under investigation.

05 / ESCALATION

Make the report useful

If the confirmed first steps do not help, capture a small reproducible evidence packet. Include game version, Windows version, CPU, GPU, driver version, RAM, storage type, display mode, resolution, upscaler or frame-generation state, controller model and the shortest steps that trigger the symptom. For a crash, attach the exact error text rather than paraphrasing it. For stutter, state whether it happens during camera rotation, traversal, combat or every scene.

Also state what changed the result: “Full Screen reduced the spikes,” “no difference after restart,” or “shader compilation always crashes at the same point” is more actionable than “performance is bad.” Never upload save files or logs containing personal paths publicly without checking them first.

06 / FAQ

Common questions

How do I reduce Dawnwalker stutter on PC?

Try Full Screen instead of Windowed or Borderless, then restart and repeat the same route. This is the developer’s current workaround for that specific known issue.

What if it crashes while compiling shaders?

Check your BIOS version against the exact motherboard or PC manufacturer support page. Follow vendor instructions only; firmware changes carry more risk than an in-game setting.

Does Hotfix 1.0.2 fix every controller issue?

No. It adjusts PC dead-zone and sprint behavior. Community reports about automatic keyboard/controller switching are mixed, and missing PS5 gamepad remapping is still listed as under investigation.

Should I delete shader caches or saves?

Not as a first step. The developer notice does not prescribe deleting saves or caches. Preserve data and begin with the reversible, published checks above.
